Following up on the 90 day ‘rule’ for Global Entry

Yesterday's post queried the dubious rule of whether my Global Entry interview would need to take place within 90 days of online notification of conditional approval.

The ultra-efficient Larry Panetta responded within 1 working day after I pasted him this quote:

Approved Global Entry program applicants have 30 days from the date of their online approval notice to schedule an appointment with their nearest enrollment center. The actual appointment must be within 90 days of the date of the online approval notice.

The response was simple and sweet. The 90 days rule doesn't exist, and that he'd have the page amended. True to his word the page was updated less than 2 hours after he sent me his email, and the paragraph now reads as follows:

Approved Global Entry program applicants have 30 days from the date of their online approval notice to schedule an appointment with their nearest enrollment center.

And according to reader Alex‘s experience, it seems to be the case that rescheduling many times doesn't affect the application too.

I had my interview probably about 8 months after my approval (kept scheduling and rescheduling because of travel patterns, lack of enrollment center in my area, and how booked they all were). No problem with that

So there it is, no extra trip required, though I'd have loved to have coined the term ’Global Entry Run’.

Thanks Mr. Panetta and Alex for your contributions to the frequent flier community's knowledge!

  1. Forgot to mention, as a follow up to my comments above–only trouble is if you miss your appointment or don’t cancel 24hrs in advance I had a challenging time calling the centers to cancel–within 24hrs of the interview it won’t let you cancel online. So make sure if canceling or rescheduling to do it in advance

  2. I had to wait almost 4 months when Global Entry first came out (DC region). I’ve never heard of this rule. Enjoy your interview the agent gave me a hell of a time, because he thought I traveled too much “without reason” (no one needs a reason to go to Europe for a long weekend a few times a year).

    1. Sorry to reply so late, but do you mind describing your interview process? All accounts I’ve heard so far have been pleasantly polite, yours must be the first time I’ve heard of a grilling!
