British Airways allows free transfers in North Korea!

Part of the nomadic lifestyle that I've begun came from the passionate curiosity I have about events and lands far away. To balance out some of my travel reading, one of my favourite blogs is Rapid Travel Chai, who is perhaps BoardingArea's most interesting authors on ‘unusual' travel. He has an interesting post reflecting his thoughts in planning a trip to North Korea here.

Whether I will ever follow an itinerary like this is doubtful, but the academic in me at least wants to find a routing that's valid and bookable.

I was looking to head to South East Asia later in the year. Investigating a Hong Kong to London leg on British Airways, I saw on fare basis OLRC1UK that the rules offer a free transfer in North Korea:

Hong Kong to London Heathrow is 5994 miles on GCMap, and the Maximum Permissible Mileage (+25% bracket) is therefore 1.2*1.25*5994 = 8991 miles.

Hong Kong – Pyongyang – London Heathrow is 6750 miles which gives around 2241 miles of transferring space before hitting the limit. This comes especially helpful since the only international destinations from Pyongyang are Beijing, Shanghai (but clearly these would eat into the “1 free in China in each direction”) and Vladivostok.

The flight numbers between PEK-FNJ are CA121 and CA122 which would satisfy the permissible carriers in the Category 4 flight restrictions of the fare rules (see the end of this post for the full rules). There's even good availability in all fare buckets in November!

So given the fantastic complexity of a tagging in a non-Oneworld partner into the ticket, possibly invoking a Higher Intermediate Point, could there be any way else to claim this free transfer in North Korea?! Answers on a postcard please…
